The RUE Certification Program will Incentivize Energy Producers and Datacentre Operators and Users to Enhance Resource Management and ESG Performance Standards

The exponential growth in demand for electricity to power data centre operations is slowly becoming an important global megatrend – in parallel to the process of digitalisation in the public and private sectors. Developing technologies and practices to incentivise countries and businesses to develop sustainable digital infrastructure is therefore imperative.

Waiys, a leading innovator in creating a sustainable bridge between excess energy and the exponentially growing demand for green computing power, is therefore delighted to announce that Waiys Chairman, Olav Skalmeraas, and UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller signed a Joint Declaration on 6 October 2022 to develop a framework for Resource Utilization Efficiency (RUE) certification.

The RUE certification program aims to help organisations meet tightening regulatory requirements, incentivising them to strive for enhanced resource utilization efficiency and higher ESG performance standards, while providing much needed green computing power. In this way, organisations that achieve certification can differentiate themselves from their peers through a rigorous and verifiable process.

Following the signing ceremony, representatives from Waiys and UNIDO held an inaugural workshop to further refine the scope of the collaboration and discuss next steps.

Both parties share a positive market outlook for the demand for power for data storage and processing services, as well as a commitment to improving resource management and contributing positively to creating a world powered by renewable and sustainable energy.

«We are proud to have the opportunity to work with an organization like UNIDO on such an important initiative. Waiys was founded to tackle the growing challenges of digitalisation and increased efficiency in energy utilisation within the energy sector by capturing excess energy from various sources and converting it into computing power. We cannot think of a better partner to establish a thorough and consistent framework to empower businesses and society at large to achieve a sustainable world” says Olav Skalmeraas, Chairman and Co-Founder of Waiys.

«Both data and energy are important factors to achieve sustainable industrialization, and UNIDO will continue to be committed to support acceleration of green economy and digitalisation. No Energy, No Data, No Industrialization” says Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO.

About Waiys

Waiys provides a sustainable solution for powering datacentres by utilizing excess energy from wind, solar, geo-thermal and gas to cater for the increased computing power demand – without any negative impact on existing grids.

The company positions scalable modular datacentre units at local power production facilities around the world, taking advantage of the most energy-efficient technologies to utilise the excess energy on site for HPC when no other offtake is commercially viable, or when demand and energy prices are low.

Led by Marie Andrea Stenfeldt, Chief Operational Manager, Waiys was founded by pioneers from wind and solar industries as well as international E&P.

About UNIDO

UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations with a unique mandate to promote and accelerate sustainable industrial and economic development.

UNIDO supports countries to industrialize in ways that foster digital and green transitions and accelerate progress with the Sustainable Development Goals.
